Whether you travel with your dog for only a few days or are traveling longer – a dog tent is always a practical companion. Which dog tent for your dog and you is the right one, we show you here.
Why do I need a dog tent?
Very different occasions can be the reason that the purchase of a dog tent is a very practical solution.
These situations can be, for example:
The dog should not stay overnight in the tent.
The dog needs a temporary “accommodation” and a quiet place to sleep when traveling.
Your dog needs a shady place or sun-sheltered berth on the beach.
There are hardly any shadows in your garden, but you want to offer your dog a shady spot.
What qualities should a good dog tent have?
Depending on what you need the dog tent, it should be more or less robust.
If you want to make a real camping trip with your dog, the tent should be water-repellent, waterproof, lockable and sturdy enough for your dog. You do not want to be in the wet in your tent – pay attention to the same criteria when choosing a dog tent.
In addition, the tent should then be closed with zippers and have sufficient net inserts, so that enough air can circulate.
For a visit to the beach, if you only want to use the dog tent as a shade for your four-legged, but also a dog tent, which is not lockable. It does not necessarily have to be water-repellent or waterproof. However, you should make sure that the tent can withstand wind and perhaps also be supplied herring for attachment in the ground. So the dog tent can not fly you away.
Sizes, cleaning, construction, removal and transportation
Dog tents are available in different sizes. With small dogs such as a Dachshund, Westie or Beagle, the choice will be relatively easy. For medium to large dogs – such as Labrador, Husky, German Shepherd or a Great Dane – you should pay attention to the size of the tent.
Your dog should be able to relax and lie in the tent. If you are not sure, you can measure with a tape measure quite simply the length, sitting and standing height of your dog and compare with the information of each tent.
Tip for dog owners of very large dogs: If all dog tents are too small, a 1-person tent may offer the right solution. These tents are set up in seconds and provide sufficient space for an adult person. This space should be enough for very large dogs.
By the way, most dog tents are pretty easy to assemble and disassemble and relatively light. Usually they are delivered in a handy bag and are therefore easy to transport.
Dog tents for camping
As we already described, a dog tent for the camping trip should meet some criteria. The tent should include:
be water repellent
have a waterproof floor
be closed with a zipper
provide enough mesh inserts for air circulation
be big enough for your dog to lie, stand and sit.
Dog tents for the beach & garden
If you are just looking for a dog tent as a shade or resting place for your dog for the beach, the tent does not have to meet as many criteria as camping. Here it is important that the tent provides sufficient shade and allows enough air to circulate, so that your four-legged friend can cool off sufficiently when it is really warm again.
In this course, you should also pay attention to the UV protection of the dog tent – often this is stated. We recommend the following dog tents for beach and garden
